The Viet Minh’s tyrannical control made progress very difficult for the locals, and as the Viet Minh grew stronger, life became even more miserable. There came a point when every family member had to work to put food on the table. To help his family, my dad began working at a very young age, like most other kids at that time. Starting at the age of 10, he worked in the rice paddies and herded ducks during the day, and then attended school at night.
